THIS WEEK: Minot State plays a broken schedule to finish of the 2015 regular season, traveling to Minnesota State University Moorhead Friday, before returning home for a single game against Northern State at Herb Parker Stadium in the finale.
RECORDS: Minot State (12-3-1, 10-2-1) split the weekend with a loss against Augustana and a victory over Wayne State. Minnesota State Moorhead (1-10-4, 1-10-2) lost to Southwest Minnesota State and tied Sioux Falls last week. Northern State (7-8-1, 5-7-1) won both of its games against Sioux Falls and Southwest Minnesota State.
COACHES CORNER:
Jason Spain is in his sixth season as head coach of the women's soccer program at Minot State. Spain has done impressive work in his four seasons with the team, sporting a highly successful 52-34-11 record. Last season, Spain led the Beavers to their third consecutive birth in the NSIC postseason tournament. In 2012, the Beavers won the NSIC tournament and claimed the automatic bid into the NCAA Division II tournament. Rollie Bulock is in his 17th season as the head coach for Minnesota State Moorhead. Credited with beginning the program, Bulock has been at the helm since the first year the Dragons competed in women's soccer. The three-time NSIC Coach of the Year has an overall record of 94-181-13 during his time at MSUM. Starting with the program in 1995, Bulock left the team in 1999 spending two years as an assistant at Northern State and two years as the head coach of Wayne State before returning to MSU Moorhead in 2004. Steve Kehm is in his 18th season as the head coach of Northern State. Another coach that has been with the team since the inaugural season he has accumulated a 168-134-34 record in his first 17 season. Kehm was named the chair of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America's NCAA Division II weekly rankings in the summer of 2013. He also serves as the Director of Coaching for the Olympic Development Program in the Dakotas.
RANKINGS: Minot State is no longer ranked in the top 25 after being ranked the past two weeks, but did receive votes in the October 27 National Soccer Coaches Association of America Division II poll. Neither Minnesota State Moorhead nor Northern State received votes in the poll. Minot State also remained at No. 4 in the NCAA regional rankings.
NOTING THE BEAVERS: After suffering two-straight losses for the first time since last season Minot State was able to bounce back in a double overtime win against Wayne State with a header from leading goal scorer
Ninfa Ramirez (F, Jr., Perris, Calif.) to end the game. With the losses the Beavers found themselves out of the top two spots in the conference standings for the first time all season. Currently sitting at third, Minot State only needs two points over the weekend to secure the outright third place finish. Â
NOTING THE DRAGONS: Minnesota State Moorhead has struggled on both ends this season ranking second to last in goals scored (seven) in the conference and last in goals allowed (38). Where the Dragons do lead the conference is in saves. MSUM goalkeepers have saved 145 shots from adding points onto the scoreboard. 114 of those saves have come from Ashley Leintz who currently leads the NSIC in goals saved.
NOTING THE WOLVES: Northern State is another team that struggles to keep the ball away from its goalkeeper allowing 25 goals to be scored (12th in the NSIC) while still being able to save the ball 111 times (fourth in the NSIC). The player leading the NSU attack is Anna Bondy who leads the team in shots, goals scored and points. Â
SERIES HISTORY: The Beavers have seen success against these two teams in the past never suffering a loss to either. With a 4-0-1 record against MSU Moorhead and a 3-0-1 record against Northern State, Minot State has shown its strength in these series that both began in 2010.
LAST TIME OUT: Minot State traveled to Northern State and hosted MSU Moorhead winning both games by a total of 6-0.
Maritssa Perez (CM, So., Santa Ana, Calif.) scored her first goal of the season against Northern State and was the only current Beaver to score last season against either of these teams.
SPOT IN HISTORY: With her 12th goal of the season, the game-winning goal against Wayne State in double overtime,
Ninfa Ramirez (F, Jr., Perris, Calif.) secured her spot at the top of the list for the most goals scored in a season in Minot State history. With 26 points she is also currently ranked in the No. 2 spot for most points in a season. The current leader for points is Zoe Fisher who scored 31 in 2012. With those 12 goals Ramirez is also on the career list. Ranking fifth on the goal in a career standings she trails
Jamie Council and
Jamie MacFarlane who are tied for third most with 14 apiece.
DEFENSIVE LEADERS: The Beavers have only allowed 50 shots on goal throughout the 2015 season, by far the lowest of any team in the NSIC. Allowing 12 of those shots to go in and saving 38 the MSU goalkeepers have yet to face many shots. The next closest teams are Winona State and Augustana with 67 and 71 shots on goal, respectively.
ON THE CORNER: With a strong offensive attack the Beavers have been able to force opponents to put the ball out of bounds past their own goal line. With 87 corner kicks taken by the team Minot State is tied for the second most corners taken, four behind Winona State who leads the NSIC. Minot State has scored three goals from assists off of corner kicks.
BY THE NUMBERS5: Assists from
Chloe Melton (F, Jr., Fleet, England). That mark leads the team and Melton has also added two goals on the year for a total of nine points.
27: Goals made by Minot State. Compared to last season's 28 the Beavers look like they will beat that standard. The most goals in a season by an MSU team is 39, scored in 2011.
66: Shots taken by
Ninfa Ramirez (F, Jr., Perris Calif.). With 39 of those shots on goal she leads the team in both categories by at least 24.
