MINOT, N.D. – As the end of the regular season creeps nearer and the postseason playoff picture begins to unfold, the Minot State baseball team hoped to nab a couple of important victories Wednesday as they traveled to the University of Mary for a mid-week doubleheader.
The Marauders had a different agenda.
MSU fell victim to defeat twice on its trip to Bismarck, N.D. as U-Mary pulled out two one-run victories in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action.
Game one was a story of too little too late for the Beavers as they trailed 4-1 heading into the sixth inning. It looked as if MSU would tie the game or take the lead in the top of the sixth as the first three batters reached to load the bases.
Jordan Schulz (So., OF, Strasbourg, Saskatchewan) drove in a run by drawing a walk and
Keith Ailes (Jr., OF/1B, Bozeman, Mont.) recorded an RBI on a hit hit-by-pitch, but that's all the damage the Beavers would do in the sixth inning as they were unable to record a hit.
U-Mary went on to take game one, 4-3, and overshadowed a strong outing from Beavers' starting pitcher
Joshua Larsen (Sr., Surrey, British Columbia). Larsen ended his day throwing six innings giving up just two earned runs and striking out 11 batters.
After the Marauders jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning of game two, MSU picked up starting pitcher
Austin Zorn (Sr., Bismarck, N.D.) tallying four runs in the second inning and one more run in the third.
Zorn recorded his second consecutive quality start and was in line for the win after 6.2 innings of strong work, but U-Mary rallied in the bottom of the eighth.
The Marauders led off the eighth with three straight singles which ultimately led to three runs and a 6-5 lead heading to the ninth.
Minot State was retired in order in the top of the ninth securing the game two victory for U-Mary.
Offensively, three different players recorded multi-hit games in either of the games for the Beavers.
Paul Vogelsang (So., C, Regina, Saskatchewan) went 3-for-4 in game one while
Jared Young (Fr., INF, Prince George, British Columbia) and
Trevor Gust (Sr., C/DH, Minot, N.D.) each recorded two hits in game two.
Minot State falls to 11-24 overall with the losses and 8-16 in the NSIC.
The Beavers will continue their eight game roadtrip this weekend when they travel to No. 2 St. Cloud State for a four-game series.
