MOORHEAD, MINN. - The Minot State University soccer team defeated MSU Moorhead 2-0 Friday afternoon to secure the first NSIC Regular Season Championship in school history.
The No. 11 Beavers outshot their opponent 34-6, including 18-3 in shots on goal. The Dragons goalkeeper Reagan VonBerge helped her team hang around as she had multiple saves that many others couldn't have made.
"She played well for them today, keeping them in the game," head coach
Jason Spain said. "Her and midfielder Hanna Loos played a strong game and challenged us."
After several foiled attempts,
Ninfa Ramirez netted a goal in the 40th minute with an assist from
Chloe Melton. It was Ramirez's 18th goal of the season, eclipsing the MSU record 16 she set last year. Melton also set a school record for career assists on the goal with her 17th as a Beaver.
"It's always nice to break records and as long as I'm helping my teammates score goals that's what means the most to me, but the records are always going to be something I remember forever," Melton said. "I just feel like I have good vision and I know where people are going to make those runs, especially Ninja, her and I connect so well and I think that has helped massively."
The second goal of the game came from fellow senior
Dalia Tapia who put the ball in the net off a corner kick from Ramirez.
The Beavers still have one game remaining on their schedule as Spain will remind his team, one of his goals is to go undefeated in NSIC play, but for now the team is pretty happy.
"It's the best feeling in the world. I can't really describe it," Melton said about winning the NSIC Championship. "I'm still in shock that it's actually happened, but four years of hard work has finally paid off and it's amazing."
Minot State will host its final regular season game of the year at Herb Parker Stadium on October 30 at 1 p.m. The game, against Northern State, will also be senior day for the Beavers.
