Beavers Look to Complete Sweep of Mary

MINOT, N.D. -- The Minot State men's basketball team will look to complete the season sweep of Mary when the Beavers visit the Marauders for a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference game on Tuesday (Dec. 19) at 7:30 p.m. in the McDowell Activity Center.

The Beavers will be attempting to sweep Mary for the first time since the 2014-15 season. That year, Minot State won at Mary 66-61 and then completed the sweep with a 93-88 win in the Minot State Dome.

Minot State got 28 points and 14 rebounds from senior Tyler Rudolph and used a 29-8 run midway through the second half to defeat Mary 91-61 on Nov. 25 in the Minot State Dome earlier this season. The Beavers held an 18-point lead early in the second half before the Marauders climbed to within 48-44 at the 15:54 mark of the second period before the Beavers put the game away with a 29-8 run.

Russ Davis added 15 points, while Luis Ricci Maia had 14 points, five assists and two steals for Minot State. Ten of the 11 Minot State players who saw action scored as Nathaniel Moore had nine points and Akibo and Max Cody each finished with seven points. The Beavers shot 56.3 percent from the floor, including a blistering 62.5 percent in the second half. Minot State also shot a season-high 58.8 percent from the three-point line and also made 75.0 percent of its free throw attempts.

Minot State, which is 10-1 overall and 4-1 in the NSIC, will be looking to extend its current winning streak to four straight games. After suffering its only loss of the season to Northern State, the Beavers have regrouped and reeled off victories over Minnesota State Moorhead, Augustana and Wayne State. Minot State is currently tied for second in the NSIC North with St. Cloud State who also has a 4-1 record in league play, while Northern State occupies the top spot in the conference with a 5-0 mark.

Rudolph, who has earned the NSIC North Division Player of the Week honor three times this season, leads the Beavers averaging 23.5 points per game which ranks second in the NSIC. He also is second in the NSIC shooting 62.4 percent from the floor and ranks third in the conference averaging 8.3 rebounds per contest.

Junior David Akibo is second on the Beavers in both scoring (11.5) and rebounding (7.2). He ranks 42nd overall in the conference in scoring and is eighth in rebounding.

Senior Luis Ricci Maia is currently second in the NSIC averaging 6.6 assists per contest and ranks sixth averaging 1.5 steals per game. Ricci Maia has at least five assists in 10 of the 11 games played this season and has three double-figure assist games on the year. He handed out a career-high 12 assists against Minnesota State Moorhead and also had 10 assists against Valley City State and Augustana.

The Beavers are one of the top defensive teams in the NSIC allowing just 65.7 points per game, which ranks second in the conference. Minot State is also second in the league allowing just 41.6 percent field goal shooting and third permitting 32.5 percent shooting from the three-point line.

Mary, which is 2-7 overall and 0-5 in the NSIC, has dropped four straight games including a 114-81 loss to Augustana in its last game on Dec. 9. Keith Hunter is the Marauders leading scorer averaging 14.6 points per game, while Trevor Zacher averages 12.3 points per game and Tom Kubank averages 10.8 per contest.
