Bats help Beavers sweep Dickinson State

WATFORD CITY, N.D. – Minot State University overcame an early deficit to win game 1 and then blew out Dickinson State in game 2 to earn a pair of nonconference NCAA Division II baseball wins Wednesday at Roughrider Complex.

The Beavers (8-3 overall) trailed Dickinson State (10-12) 6-0 after the top half of the first, 6-4 after one full inning and 10-4 after the top of the third. MSU scored four in the first, five in the third, two in the fourth and a single run in each of the fifth and sixth innings for the win. In game 2, MSU had a nine-run second inning to blow open the game, leading 12-0 after two and 16-0 after three.

"We put ourselves in a nice hole twice in game 1. It was good to see our guys really bounce back after those innings and get us back in the game," said MSU head coach Scott Eul. "Wyatt Moore was able to keep us within striking distanced and we kept battling. All year we have bounced back after we have given up a couple runs. It gives our pitching staff confidence and has kept us in games all year."

Moore came in the first inning to relieve starter Aaron Kern and pitched 5 1/3 innings, giving up just four runs while striking out six to improve to 1-0 on the season. Brock Breshears pitched a solid seventh for his first save.

The Beavers finished with 15 hits and drew three walks to score its 13 runs. Sean Alp, Jordan Schulz, Celestino Rodriguez and Trevaun Smith all hit home runs. Geordie McDougall had three hits, while Alp, Schulz, Rodriguez and Michael Borst finished with two hits apiece. Alp drove in four runs.

Micquel Robinson went 2 for 3 to lead Dickinson State.

In game 2, MSU poured on the runs and hits, finishing with 16 hits in the game. Jarrod Adams had four hits and four RBIs, while Borst blasted a grand slam and finished with three hits and eight RBIs for the Beavers.

"We needed a game like this to really break out offensively as a unit and it was nice to see both games we were relentless in scoring runs," Eul said. "It was a really nice tune up heading into our conference series this weekend with Concordia St. Paul. They are going to be pretty fired up after we beat them earlier so it will be great to see our guys come out and get after it again."

MSU used a pitch-by-committee approach as Kendal Daniels and Mark Fullbright each pitched two innings to start. Neither gave up a run and Daniels allowed just one hit and struck out three in two innings. Fullbright earned the win in relief, his first of the season.

"It was good to see Kendal bounce back with a couple really solid innings for us after a rough start," said Eul. "He is a big part of our pitching staff and really gives us a lot of options throughout the week."

Jacob Cuch had three this including a home run to pace DSU.

MSU will travel to Concordia St. Paul Saturday and Sunday for pair of NSIC games.
