Seventh Inning Rally Clinches Series Win Over Mavericks

PLATTSMOUTH, Neb. – The Minot State baseball team used a seven-run seventh inning rally to win 12-10 in the second game and clinch a 3-1 series win over Minnesota State at Plattsmouth, Neb. The Beavers also defeated the Mavericks in the first game, 7-1.

With the two wins, Minot State improves to 8-10 (6-2 NSIC) on the season while the Mavericks fall to 10-7 (5-3 NSIC).

Game One

After two scoreless innings, Dustin Wilcox led off the third with a triple to right field. Kyle Williamson recorded an RBI groundout to second, allowing Wilcox to score and break a scoreless tie.

Williamson reached on a single to right and scored on an RBI single from Wyatt Schlosser. Schlosser later scored on an RBI single to center from Michael Borst, as the Beavers took a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the fifth inning.

Minnesota State scored their lone run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning on a bases-loaded walk.

The Beavers answered in the sixth inning with a pair of runs to extend their lead to 5-1. Darrel Doll led off the inning with a double to right center, followed by a single from Ethan Fleming before scoring on an RBI double by Trevaun Smith. Fleming later scored on a wild pitch to give Minot State a 5-1 lead.

Minot State added two runs in the seventh inning when Borst reached on a Maverick error before Doll smacked a 2-1 pitched over the right field fence for his NSIC-leading sixth home run of the season.

Schlosser and Doll led the Beavers at the plate with a team-high two hits while Doll also lead the team with two RBIs. Five other Beavers also recorded a hit in the 7-1 victory.

Starter Andres Hackman improved to 2-3 on the season after tossing 4.2 inning on the mound while giving up one run on four hits and striking out six Minnesota State batters.

Tannar Galey pitched the final 2.1 innings while only surrendering one hit and recording three strikeouts.

Game Two

Williamson led off the final game of the series with a single to left field before advancing to third on a wild pitch. Schlosser followed with an RBI groundout to score Williamson and give Minot State an early 1-0 lead.

Minnesota State answered in the bottom half of the first inning by scoring three runs on four hits to take a 3-1 lead after the first inning. The Mavericks doubled their lead with RBI singles in the fourth and fifth innings to take 5-1 advantage over the Beavers.

Minot State trimmed the deficit in half in the top of the sixth when Doll ripped a 2-2 pitch to right center for an RBI double, scoring Borst and Schlosser.

After cutting the Maverick lead down to 5-3, the Beaver offense exploded for seven runs in the seventh inning to take a 10-5 lead. The Beavers tied the game at five on an RBI single from Williamson after Fleming scored on a sac bunt by Smith.

The Beavers took the lead when Schlosser singled through the right side, allowing Smith to score. Borst followed with an RBI single before Doll was retired on an RBI groundout to give the Beavers an 8-5 lead.

Minot State added two more runs in the seventh inning when Celestino Rodriguez and Fleming notched back-to-back RBI doubles allowing Borst and Rodriguez to score.

The Mavericks added a run in the bottom of the seventh before Minot State tallied two runs in the top of the eighth. Williamson scored on a throwing error before Borst reached on an RBI single to score Schlosser.

Minnesota State scored four runs on two hits and a Minot State error in the bottom of the eighth inning, but couldn't complete the comeback, as the Beavers held on for the series-clinching 12-10 victory.

As a team, the Minot State offense scored 12 runs on 16 hits while committing two errors. Williamson and Rodriguez led the Beavers with a team-high three hits each.

Schlosser, Borst and Fleming added two hits apiece while three other Beavers recorded one hit.

Jeremy Sylvester earned his second win of the season while throwing 2.1 innings on the mound and surrendering three runs on five hits.

Brock Breshears tossed the final 1.1 innings to record his first save of the season while only allowing one hit and striking out two Mavericks.

Minot State's home opener of the season scheduled for Tuesday, March 27 vs. Minnesota Crookston has been moved to Watford City, N.D. due to unplayable field conditions.
