2-1 Victory over No. 11 Jamestown improves undefeated Beavers to 10-0

MINOT, ND – "Nine's a fluke, ten's a streak", recalls head coach Wyatt Waselenchuk on his team's 10th straight victory of the season after scraping away a 2-1 victory over No. 11 University of Jamestown.

Connor Navrot's power play goal 13 minutes, 5 seconds into the first period allowed the Beavers to take the lead over the Jimmies, 1-0. Jared Hamm and Nick Doyle set Navrot up for the perfect shot while taking advantage of Jamestown's Aiden Cornell's penalty for interference at 11:51.

Austin Kromm was presented the same power-play advantage in the second period, as Jagger Thiessen found himself in the penalty box after receiving a two-minute penalty for elbowing at 8:44. Reid Wilson and Andrew Clark each earned an assist on Kromm's shot into the MSU goal. The Jimmies were unable to sneak any more pucks past MSU freshman goalkeeper, Jake Anthony, for the remainder of the period, closing out the second at 1-1.

Fans watched eagerly with the fear of an overtime period, until 7:27 in the third period when Brayden Pawluk set Jared Hamm up for the game-winning shot to slide right past UJ's goalkeeper, putting MSU on top 2-1. With just under 13 minutes left in the game, the Beavers remained persistent on their intense defense mechanisms. Jamestown, on the other hand, decided to remove their goalie for the last nine seconds of the game in hopes of the extra-attacker advantage being in their favor to tie the game up. Luckily for Minot State, they were able to hold out just long enough to come out on top of the 11th-ranked Jimmies.

Freshman Jake Anthony has now gone four straight games on the ice with one or less goals scored against him so far this season. According to head coach Wyatt Waselenchuk, the MSU hockey program has been looking forward to Anthony's success throughout his career at Minot State.

"He's fantastic," notes coach Waselenchuk, "he's just as advertised. Speaking with some people who knew Jake coming into this, we were very confident in him coming in and doing the job that he has. He's a mature kid beyond his years and he prepares like a pro. He dials in and his practice habits are great."

Between Anthony and Riley Wallace thus far, the Beavers' defense in between the pipes has has a great tandem.

With a tight game going into the third period between the No. 1 and No. 11 teams, head coach Waselenchuk refers to the locker-room talk to prepare the guys to get back on the ice and earn the win as "all positive!".

"This is right where we want to be; we want to play in tough games," notes Waselenchuk on the heightened competition between the Beavers and the Jimmies. "We want to be in games where our backs are against the walls a little bit; I don't think there's any panicking there." Waselenchuk continues: "We're a pretty veteran group and we responded quite well."

Now officially 10-0-0, Minot State is set to travel to Illinois this weekend to compete in an eight-team showcase tournament in the city of Champaign. MSU will compete against many other top-ranked ACHA  teams on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (Nov. 19th-Nov. 21st). The Beavers open the tournament against Arizona State at 3 p.m. on Friday.
