PITTSBURG, Kan. -- The Minot State baseball team used four pitchers to strike out 14 batters but fell into an early two-run hole and could not complete the comeback leading to a 4-2 loss at Pittsburg State on Wednesday.
The Beavers (1-2) slip to 1-2 overall after dropping the second game of the road trip against Northwest Missouri State yesterday and falling by two runs to the host school, Pittsburg State, today. PSU improves to 3-0 in the early season with the win.
Minot State limited a Gorilla offense that seemed to have no limits early on in the season as PSU scored 37 runs in its first two games against Missouri Western (17) and Northwest Missouri State (20) over the last two days.
The Beavers struck out 14 batters as a pitching staff, and outside of three runs surrendered by
Zach Newman (L, 0-1), the bullpen limited the Gorillas to one run over the final 4.1 innings.
Jordan Chappell registered seven strikeouts over 3.0 innings in relief and was impressive despite being charged with one run after being removed from the game.
Offensively it was a slow start with the bats at the plate for the Beavers as they were held to one run on four hits over the first five innings before finally scoring a second run in the top of the 6th inning. In all, the Beavers did not record more than two hits in one inning during the game and finished with just two runs on seven hits.
MSU grabbed a lead in the top of the second inning when
Tyler Wiltshire doubled to left-center scoring
Nolan Monthei and putting the Beavers on top 1-0 through two innings.
Pittsburg State answered back in the home-half of the third inning with three runs on three hits. Cruz Aranda began the scoring with a run-scoring single, driving in Garrett McGowan to tie the game 1-1. Ryan Koval doubled and Aranda scored. A single by Dawson Pomeroy and a throwing error capped a three-run rally allowing Koval to score pushing PSU in front 3-1 through three innings.
Minot State did not scratch across another run until the top of the sixth inning when, with two outs,
Ryley Humrighouse singled to right field and
Jackson Pokorney scored cutting the deficit to 3-2.
PSU scored the insurance run it needed with two outs in the bottom of the seventh when Aranda reached on an infield single and Mason Hartman scored to push the Gorillas in front 4-2.
The Beavers managed just one hit in the last three innings and left three runners on base as they fell by two runs.
Minot State baseball continues its road trip tomorrow as they make an almost two-hour drive down to Claremore, Oklahoma to face Rogers State at 1 p.m. Tomorrow's matchup will be available on
video stream and the
stats will be available as well.
