MANDAN, N.D. – A two-goal lead wasn't enough, and neither was a late charge.
The No. 1-ranked Minot State men's hockey team came up short for the first time this season, falling on the road to in-state rival the University of Mary, 3-2 on Saturday night.
The win was the first for Mary, the two-time defending ACHA Division II national champs, over the ACHA Division I Beavers.
Minot State (13-1-0 overall), which beat the Marauders 3-1 on Friday in Minot, looked prepared to run away with another victory as
Davis Sheldon scored 17 seconds into the game off a
Connor Navrot assist, then
Drew Carter pushed the Beavers in front 2-0 with a goal with 9:08 left in the first.
Payton Jerome assisted on Carter's tally.
But the second period belonged to the host Marauders who scored 8:20 into the session, then tied it with 7:14 left until the break.
It stayed deadlocked 2-2 until the final moments of the third, leading to a dramatic finish.
Mary broke the tie with 3:16 left in the action, putting Minot State into comeback mode, and with goalie
Jake Anthony on the bench for an extra attacker, the Beavers appeared to have tied it with 5.7 seconds remaining only to have the equalizer waved off by officials, sealing the Mary win.
Anthony finished with 22 saves in goal for Minot State as the Beavers outshot the Marauders 37-25.
Minot State now looks to bounce back when the Beavers host Central Oklahoma on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 9 and 10.
