MINOT, ND — Minot State men's hockey stomped on the University of Arizona, ranked 16th in the ACHA, in a 7-1 blowout on Friday night on the Beavers' home ice. This makes twelve wins in a row for MSU, improving their overall record to 27-2-0-0 and averaging a 93.1% winning percentage on the year so far.
Carter Barley opened up the night with the first goal for Minot State just one minute and eighteen seconds after the puck dropped to start the first period. The Beavers held the Wildcats off from scoring at all in the first and even tacked one more onto the board for themselves just fifty-two seconds before heading into the locker rooms for intermission, ending the first period with lead of 2-0.
MSU barreled though the No. 16 Arizona's defense with goals one after another after another after another at the beginning of the second period. At 17:45 in the second, former Minotauros skater Jay Buccholz added a third goal for the Beavers with assists by
Josh Pederson and Paul O'connor. Thirty-four seconds later, Buccholz returned the favor with an assist from himself along with
Reid Arnold, who both found a way to set
Reece Henry up for the perfect shot, giving MSU another goal in under a minute. With a lead of 4-0 over the Wildcats, Minot State was feeling good on their hot scoring streak for the night. At 13:55 in the second period
Davis Sheldon decided to get in on the scoring action with an assist over to
Josh Pederson, who set Buccholz up again for his second goal of the night and the Beavers' fifth, making the score 5-0 with over thirty-three minutes of play left in the game. The Wildcats found a way to respond by sneaking one shot by MSU goalie
Riley Wallace at 12:19, to which Minot State responded with shutting down the Wildcat scoring for the remainder of the night.
Coming into the third period of play with a 5-1 lead over the Wildcats wasn't enough to end the night on as MSU punched through two more goals on the night, sponsored by
Justin Metcalf and
Landyn Cochrane.
Davis Sheldon and
Drew Carter earned an assist apiece in Cochrane's final goal of the night at 12:02. Just minutes prior, Metcalf scored the sixth goal of the night and the only unassisted scoring from both sides on the night.
Minot State out-shot the Wildcats a whopping 41-12, giving goalie
Riley Wallace just 11 saves on the night.
