MINOT, ND — No. 2 Minot State pummels over No. 9 Jamestown Jimmies in a 9-0 complete shutout on Wednesday night at the Maysa Arena. The Beavers have now taken seven out of the eight matchups between the two top-ranked teams and look to gain their eighth victory against their North Dakotan neighbors as they close out their regular season in Jamestown this upcoming Friday night.
According to this season's history between the two teams, aggressive play from extremely talented skaters was expected in any game that had Minot State facing off against the University of Jamestown Jimmies. Wednesday night, though, MSU took control of the wheel and never gave it back to the Jimmies from the jump, scoring four goals in the first period of the game.
Carter Barley and
Wayde Johannesson set
Connor Navrot up for the first goal–and certainly not even close to the last–of the night for MSU. Navrot retrurned to favor with an assist, along with the assistance of
Drew Carter, to Barley, who scored the second goal for the Beavers at 10:36 in the first period.
Reid Arnold and
Jared Hamm got themselves into the scoring action with an assist each in
Reece Henry's goal less than a minute after Barley's goal, quickly improving the lead to 3-0 over the Jimmies.
Brayden Pawluk, who scored 66% of MSU's goals in Tuesday night's game against Dakota College-Bottineau, snuck one more shot past Jamestown's goalie with just 41 seconds left in the first twenty minutes of the game.
Coming onto the ice with a lead of 4-0 to start the second period of their last home game of the season, the Beavers were still on a hot streak from the first. Taking advantage of the power play advantage, Navrot and Barley tipped one up to
Jared Hamm to dump the puck into the Jimmies' net 9:46 into the second period. Captain
Davis Sheldon found himself on the scoresheet tonight as well, scoring the sixth goal of the night for the Beavers about two minutes after Hamm's power play goal, with an assist from
Jake Bestul.
Reid Arnold found himself in the penalty box for two minutes due to a roughing call at 16:35 in the second period, putting the Beavers into a one-man-down penalty kill situation on the ice.
Justin Metcalf and
Landyn Cochrane worked together to take on the four versus five man situation and came out on top with a short-handed goal at 18:08 in the second, closing out the second twenty minutes of play up 7-0 over MSU's in-state rival.
After a goalie change in the second period, the Minot State offense continued to send the puck down towards the Jimmies' net, but struggled the first half of the third period to see any offensive success. 11 minutes and 14 seconds of scoreless hockey passed into the third until
Connor Navrot served a two-minute penalty for MSU having too many men on the ice, setting Minot State up for another disadvantage in their play. Luckily for the Beavers, they'd already seen short-handed success against the UJ defensemen earlier in the night and continued to keep the underdog flame lit in the scoring situations.
Drew Carter swiped the puck over to
Josh Pederson who sent the eight goal of the night into the Jimmies' net at 12:56 in the third period.
Up 8-0 with just over six minutes left in the game, the Beavers eagerly waited the puck to hit the ice at 13:34 at a faceoff with the Jimmies, when
Landyn Cochrane and Payton jerome whizzed the puck into Jamestown's net in the blink of an eye. With no more than a few seconds passing by from the time the ref dropped the puck onto the ice and it leaving Jerome's stick to fly into the net, fans could have missed the ninth and final goal of the night quite literally in the blink of an eye.
Having improved their overall record to 30-2 along with a 14-game win streak just two weeks before the ACHA national tournament in St. Louis, MO, the Beavers look to add just one more victory to their regular season schedule this Friday night. Minot State will travel to Jamestown, ND for their ninth and final matchup of the regular season against the Jamestwon Jimmies to close out their pre-ACHA tournament run. Puck drops this Friday night in Jamestown at 7:30p.m.
