Badger shuts down Mavericks to propel Minot State to 3-2 victory

MANKATO, Minn. --Senior RJ Martinez was mowing people down on Sunday, striking out eight Minnesota State hitters over seven innings of work to help propel the Minot State Beavers over the Mavericks 3-2.

In addition to his eight strikeouts, Martinez threw seven shutout innings while giving up three hits and walking two for Minot State (7-11, 1-2). Sophomore Trevyn Badger (1-1) also made an impact on the mound for the Beavers, throwing three shutout innings while allowing one hit, with one walk and four strikeouts.

In the batter's box, the Beavers were paced by junior Kaiden Cardoso, who went 1-for-3 on the day with a double, a walk and an RBI. Freshman Dalin Ludlow put together a standout day at the plate as well, going 2-for-6 with a double. Junior Ricky Apodaca also helped out for Minot State, putting together one hit in three trips to the plate while adding two walks.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Beavers got on the scoreboard first, starting in the sixth inning. Junior Matt Malone came across to score the lone run of the inning for Minot State and get them on the board.

The Beavers then held the Mavericks scoreless before expanding their lead in the eighth inning. Minot State pushed across a run on Cardoso's two-out RBI double, which brought the Beavers lead to 2-0.

Minnesota State fought back to tie the ballgame at two before Minot State reclaimed a 3-2 advantage in the thirteenth inning. The score remained 3-2 for the rest of the game, as Minot State held on for the win.
