Martinez throws 8 strikeouts in Minot State's 13-9 loss to Mary

SIOUX FALLS, SD --Senior RJ Martinez was dominant on Sunday, punching out eight Mary hitters over five innings of work, but it was not enough as the Minot State Beavers lost to the Marauders 13-9.

In addition to his eight strikeouts, Martinez tossed five innings, giving up six runs, all of them earned, on nine hits and walking four for Minot State (23-16, 17-7).

At the plate, the Beavers were paced by Junior Kaiden Cardoso, who went 1-for-3 on the day with a home run, a walk and three RBIs. Junior Ricky Apodaca put together a noteworthy day at the dish as well, going 3-for-5 with a walk and an RBI. Sophomore Mark Ossanna also chipped in for Minot State, putting together one hit in four trips to the plate while adding a double, a walk, and an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Beavers got the scoring started early, putting four runs on the board in the top of the first inning. Minot State's offense started clicking and put up four runs, including a three-run home run off the bat of Cardoso.

The Marauders then gained ground, narrowing the lead to 4-3 until the Beavers expanded their advantage in the third. The Minot State offense exploded for five runs, highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of senior Declan Buckle, which brought the Beavers lead to 9-3. The Beavers were unable to hold the lead, as Mary scored 10 times over the remaining six innings to grab the 13-9 win.
