Minot State drops matchup 8-7 to Winona State

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. --The Minot State Beavers held a 7-6 lead into the ninth inning, but could not hold on and fell 8-7 to the Winona State Warriors Wednesday.

Senior RJ Martinez (5-1) took the loss on the mound for Minot State (26-22). Sophomore Trevyn Badger was a bright spot out of the bullpen, going three innings, surrendering one run on one hit, walking two and striking out one.

Senior Declan Buckle led the way offensively for the Beavers, going 2-for-4 in the ballgame with a double and two RBIs. Senior Drew Behling put together a standout day at the dish as well, going 1-for-3 with a double, two walks and an RBI. Senior Blake Gallagher also contributed, going 2-for-4 for Minot State with a walk and an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Beavers were trailing 3-0 in the third inning when they first put runs on the board. Minot State plated two runs off of Winona State pitching, one of which was driven in on a run-scoring double off the bat of Buckle.

The Beavers deficit grew to 5-2 before their offense got back on the scoreboard, cutting into that deficit in the fifth inning. Minot State scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Gallagher, which brought the score to 5-3 in favor of the Warriors.

Minot State held the Warriors off the board before rallying to snatch a 6-5 lead in the seventh. The Beavers got a run-scoring double from Behling as part of a three-run frame.

The Warriors then tied up the game at six before Minot State fought back to reclaim their advantage in the eighth inning. Freshman Kellen Peat crossed home plate with the lone run of the inning for the Beavers, bringing the score to 7-6 in favor of Minot State. The Beavers were unable to hold the lead, as Winona State scored two times over the remaining one inning to grab the 8-7 win.

TOURNAMENT PICTURE
The Beavers face UMary Thursday, May 12 at Ronken Field. Minot State faces the Marauders in a must win game with first pitch scheduled for noon.
