Pair of homers by Gutierrez powers offense as Beaver baseball gets sweep

ST. GEORGE, Kan. – Tough pitching and the long ball powered the Minot State baseball team to a sweep of host Emporia State on Saturday, keeping new head coach Sam Boisner undefeated, as well.

Minot State (3-0 overall) pitchers combined to strike out 17 batters in the two games and the Beavers hit five home runs, including two by Javier Gutierrez as Minot State won 3-1 and 11-1.

The two teams wrap up their four-game series on Sunday with a final game at noon.

GAME 1 | Minot State 3, Emporia State 1
ST. GEORGE, KS --The Minot State Beavers took a 2-0 lead in the first inning and never surrendered the advantage on the way to a 3-1 victory over the Emporia State Hornets on Saturday.

Junior Craig Schmich (1-0) got the win for Minot State. The right-hander went six innings, giving up one run on two hits, allowing three walks and striking out seven. Junior Austin Loeb also pitched well, going one shutout inning without allowing a hit, walking none and striking out two.

Senior Derek Kay led the way offensively for the Beavers, going 2-for-3 in the ballgame with a walk and two RBI. Junior Gunnar Kozlowitz put together a noteworthy day at the plate as well, going 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI. Junior Shane Kary also contributed, going 1-for-2 for Minot State with two walks.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Beavers got the scoring started early, putting two runs on the board in the top of the first inning. Kay drove in two runs for Minot State with a single that scored junior Brent Riddle and junior Javier Gutierrez.

The Beavers then held the Hornets scoreless before expanding their lead in the fifth inning. Minot State scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Kozlowitz, which brought the Beavers lead to 3-0. Emporia State put one run on the scoreboard before the game was over, but Minot State still held on for the 3-1 win.

ST. GEORGE, KS --Junior Javier Gutierrez put together a stellar showing at the plate Saturday, hitting two homers to help lead the Minot State Beavers past the Emporia State Hornets 11-1.

Senior Bryant Bagshaw (1-0) started on the mound and picked up the win for Minot State. The right-hander went six shutout innings while giving up two hits, allowing two walks and striking out five. Junior Cameron Bagshaw also made an impact on the mound for the Beavers, throwing one shutout inning while allowing one hit, with no walks and one strikeout.

Gutierrez went 2-for-4 at the plate, supplementing his two home runs with three RBIs. Junior Gunnar Kozlowitz added to Gutierrez's awesome power-hitting performance by going 3-for-5 with a double, a home run and three RBI. Junior Brent Riddle also helped out for the Beavers, going 1-for-4 with a home run, a walk and three RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Beavers got on the scoreboard first, starting in the fourth inning. Gutierrez put Minot State on the board with a one-out solo home run off sophomore Cade Barton.

The Hornets failed to push any runs across before the Beavers offense got back to their scoring ways the next inning. The Minot State offense exploded for four runs, highlighted by a two-run home run off the bat of Gutierrez, which brought the score to 5-0 in favor of the Beavers.

Minot State kept Emporia State without a run before building their lead to 8-0 in the seventh inning. The Beavers scored three times, with a showing that included back-to-back homers from Kozlowitz and senior Derek Kay.

Minot State kept the Hornets scoreless before their offense got in gear the next inning. The inning resulted in three runs for the Beavers, all of them scoring on a three-run homer from Riddle to left, bringing the score to 11-0 in favor of Minot State. Emporia State put one run on the scoreboard before the game was over, but the Beavers still coasted to the 11-1 win.
