Beavers open NSIC play with pair of dominating wins over Sioux Falls

ST. GEORGE, Kan. – The long road trip to Kansas didn't throw off the Minot State baseball team (11-3 overall, 2-0 NSIC), which opened NSIC play Sunday sweeping a doubleheader from Sioux Falls, beating the Cougars 10-3 and 12-4 in the neutral-site contests at Rock Creek Senior High School.

Brent Riddle led the offensive, going 4-for-9 in the twinbill with 3 RBIs in each win while Trevyn Badger picked up the game one win striking out 10 Sioux Falls batters, and Bryant Bagshaw won game No. 2 with 6 Ks on the mound.

The two teams meet again on Monday to wrap up the three-game NSIC series with the first pitch scheduled for noon in Kansas.

GAME 1 | Minot State 10, Sioux Falls 3
ST. GOERGE, Kan. --Junior Trevyn Badger was mowing people down on Thursday, striking out 10 Sioux Falls hitters over seven innings of work to help lead the Minot State Beavers past the Cougars 10-3 in the NSIC opener for both teams.

In addition to his 10 strikeouts, Badger (1-0) tossed seven innings, giving up three runs, all of them earned, on five hits and walking one for Minot State.

At the plate, the Beavers were led by senior Matt Malone, who went 2-for-4 on the day with a home run and an RBI. Sophomore Dalin Ludlow furnished a standout day at the plate as well, going 1-for-1 with three walks and two RBI. Junior Brent Riddle also chipped in for Minot State, putting together one hit in four trips to the plate while adding a walk and three RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Beavers were trailing 1-0 in the second inning when they first put runs on the board. Malone put Minot State on the board with a leadoff home run off Grayson Skinner.

The Cougars then scored one run to retake their advantage heading into the sixth inning, when the Beavers responded by getting back on the scoreboard themselves. The Minot State offense exploded for seven runs, highlighted by a two-run error off the bat of senior Derek Kay and a two-run single from Riddle, which brought the Beavers lead to 8-2.

Minot State kept Sioux Falls scoreless before building their lead to 10-2 the following inning. Sioux Falls put one run on the scoreboard before the game was over, but Minot State still coasted to the 10-3 win.

ST. GEORGE, KS. --Sophomore Dalin Ludlow and junior Brent Riddle each racked up three RBIs to help power the Minot State Beavers over the Sioux Falls Cougars 12-4 on Sunday.

Senior Bryant Bagshaw (4-0) got the win for Minot State. The right-hander went five innings, giving up two runs, both of them earned, on five hits, allowing three walks and striking out six. Senior Garrett Nicholson also pitched well, going three innings, surrendering one run on four hits, walking none and striking out four.

Brent Riddle went 3-for-5 at the plate with a home run in addition to his three RBIs and Dalin Ludlow added a three RBI performance for the Beavers, as well. Junior Mark Ossanna compiled a standout day at the dish as well, going 2-for-4 with a home run, a walk and two RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Beavers put runs on the scoreboard first, starting the scoring in the second inning. Minot State's offense started clicking and put up four runs, including a three-run error off the bat of Ludlow.

The Beavers then held the Cougars scoreless before expanding their lead in the fourth inning. Minot State picked up two runs, including one on a solo dinger off the bat of junior Javier Gutierrez, which brought the Beavers lead to 6-0.

Sioux Falls narrowed Minot State's lead to 6-1 before the Beavers stretched the advantage to 8-1 in the fifth inning. The Beavers added two to their tally on Ossanna's two-run homer to left.

The Cougars gained ground, closing the gap to 8-2 until Minot State added some insurance in the sixth. The Beavers sent home a run on Riddle's two-out solo dinger off sophomore Reese Gaber, bringing the score to 9-2 in favor of Minot State.

Sioux Falls got within 9-3 until the Beavers scored again in the seventh inning to stretch its lead to 12-3. Sioux Falls put one run on the scoreboard before the game was over, but the Beavers still coasted to the 12-4 win.
