MINOT, N.D. – It was only fitting on "Senior Night" that Minot State's seniors take over.
Getting all their goals from seniors,
Davis Sheldon broke a scoreless tie early in the second period with his first of two goals, fellow senior
Drew Carter added two more goals in the session, and
Landyn Cochrane added an insurance goal in the third period as No. 1-ranked Minot State skated past No. 7-ranked Jamestown, 5-3 on Thursday night at the Maysa Arena.
The contest was the final regular-season game for both teams as each now head to Marlborough, Massachusetts next week for the ACHA National Tournament.
It also was the final home game for Minot State seniors Sheldon, Carter, Cochrane, and teammates
Austin Wieler,
Connor Navrot,
Wayde Johannesson,
Jake Bestul,
Eric Soar, and
Dalton Dosko.
Tied 0-0 for the second straight night headed into the second period – as the two teams played a similar contest Wednesday hosted by Jamestown with Minot State scoring the 2-1 victory – Davis broke the tie with his first of the night and the 86
th of his Beaver career with 4 minutes, 45 seconds gone in the stanza.
After the Jimmies tied it midway through the period it was all Beavers, led by their seniors, as Davis scored with 3:08 left in the second, Carter scored his first of the night just 44 seconds later, then Carter made it 4-1 with his second just 17 seconds after that.
Cochrane added one more goal for Minot State (31-3-0 overall) with 4:50 gone in the third period for a bit of icing on the "Senior Night" celebration.
Carter Barley added two assists in the win, and
Troy Hamilton, Peyton Jerome, and Cochrane also had an assist for Minot State, which next is in action in the first round at nationals on next Friday, March 17, at 8 p.m. (ET).
Jake Anthony finished with 32 saves in goal for the Beavers.
