Stingy defense not enough as Minot State falls at Minnesota Duluth

DULUTH, Minn. -- The Minot State women's basketball team kept Minnesota Duluth to just 13 percent from deep in a 3-for-23 shooting performance but fell 54-50 to the Bulldogs on the road Saturday in NSIC action.

The Beavers (4-13 overall, 1-7 NSIC) had two players score in double figures, led by Lorelei McIver, who had 13 points, eight rebounds and two steals. Sydney Gustavsson tacked on 10 points, six rebounds and two steals and Vilborg Jonsdottir added five points and two steals.

Minot State's defense held Minnesota Duluth to only 13 percent shooting from beyond the arc. The Bulldogs did not have much luck cleaning up their misses on the offensive glass either, as they finished with nine offensive rebounds and managed eight second-chance points.

Coach's Comments
"This was easily our best game of the year in terms of effort and execution combined," Minot State coach Mike Brandt said. "We accomplished that on the road against a Duluth team with starters comprised of two graduate students, two seniors, and a really good sophomore that all played substantial minutes on the NCAA national runner-up team last year. This is a huge confidence boost for our young team. Hopefully, we can build on it - even with it being a loss. We took a giant step forward - but have much more to improve on."

How It Happened

After falling behind 17-8, Minot State went on a 7-0 run with 3:15 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Jonsdottir, to narrow its deficit to 17-15, a score that would hold for the rest of the period.

Minnesota Duluth kept adding to that lead, building a 28-20 advantage before Minot State went on a 7-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Jonsdottir, to narrow its deficit to 28-27. Minnesota Duluth responded and expanded its lead, leaving the Beavers trailing 30-27 heading into halftime.

Minnesota Duluth continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 32-27 advantage before Minot State went on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Taylor Goss, to tie things up at 32 with 8:37 to go in the third. The Beavers could not advance their rally further as the Bulldogs took a 45-42 lead into the fourth quarter. Minot State played well near the basket, scoring eight of its 15 points in the paint.

Minot State could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 54-50. Minot State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring six of its eight points in the paint.
