WAKEFIELD, Neb. – The Minot State baseball team hit the road to host Wayne State but ended up on the bottom end of both scores in the teams' NSIC doubleheader Friday in Nebraska.
Despite striking out 11 Wildcat batters, Minot State (8-15 overall, 5-8 NSIC) fell 6-1 in the opener, then battled in a slugfest only to come up short 17-11 in the nightcap.
The two teams play another doubleheader Saturday with Minot State as the home team on the road, as Wayne State will host the twinbill but will be the visitors on the scoreboard. First pitch is scheduled for 11:30 a.m.
GAME 1 | Wayne State 6, Minot State 1
WAKEFIELD, Neb. -- Freshman Conner Meldrim totaled six strikeouts and senior Craig Schmich added five more, but the Minot State Beavers fell to the Wayne State Wildcats 6-1 on Friday.
In addition to his six strikeouts, Meldrim went 2.2 shutout innings without giving up a hit and walking one for Minot State. Schmich's (1-5) five strikeouts came in addition to his 4.1 innings of six-run ball where he allowed nine hits while walking three.

Trailing 6-0, the Beavers first put runs on the board in the fifth inning. Sophomore Noah Madas put Minot State on the board with a one-out solo home run off Corbin Kirk. The Beavers were unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again in the ballgame.

Senior Trevyn Badger (1-3) got the ball to start for Minot State and took the loss. The right-hander went five innings, giving up three runs, zero earned, on three hits, allowing two walks and striking out one.
Gutierrez went 2-for-6 with a double in addition to his four RBIs for the Beavers. Junior Grant Gabbert compiled a noteworthy day at the plate as well, going 1-for-4 with a double, two walks and two RBI. Junior Brent Riddle also helped out for Minot State, putting together one hit in four trips to the plate while adding a walk and two RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 2-0, the Beavers first put runs on the board in the first inning. Minot State managed to push across two runs in the inning as Gutierrez drove in a run and Gabbert stole home.
The Wildcats then scored six runs to retake their advantage heading into the seventh inning, when the Beavers responded by getting back on the scoreboard themselves. Minot State brought home a pair, with one run driven in by Riddle's single, which tightened the Wildcats lead to 8-4.
Wayne State built their lead to 15-4 before the Minot State offense got back in action, reducing that lead to 15-11 in the eighth. The Beavers bats heated up in the inning, scoring seven runs, including a two-run double off the bat of Gutierrez and a two-run double from Gabbert. The Beavers were unable to get any closer, as Wayne State added two runs to their tally on the way to a 17-11 final.
