Beavers top rival Mary in opener, fall in 11 innings as teams split twinbill

BISMARCK, N.D. – Oscar Pegg hit three home runs on the day as the Beavers racked up six total on the afternoon as Minot State started fast in both games Tuesday against in-state rival the University of Mary, picking up a 7-3 win to open an NSIC doubleheader against the Marauders before Mary rallied late for a 7-6 win in 11 innings in the nightcap.
 
Minot State (14-21 overall, 9-18 NSIC) is back in action on the road once again this weekend as the Beavers play back-to-back doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday at Minnesota Duluth.
 
GAME 1 | Minot State 7, Mary 3
BISMARCK, N.D. -- Sophomore Noah Gutierrez and junior Oscar Pegg each racked up three hits to help lead the Minot State Beavers over the Mary Marauders 7-3 on Tuesday.
 
Senior Connor Hill (2-2) got the win for Minot State. The southpaw went five innings, giving up one run on four hits, allowing no walks and striking out five. Sophomore Ayden Sauerbrei also pitched well, going one shutout inning without allowing a hit, walking one and striking out two.
 
In addition to his three hits, Pegg had a double, a home run and an RBI to lead the Beavers. Gutierrez added a home run and two RBI to his three-hit performance as well. Junior Michael Williamson also contributed for Minot State, putting together one hit in four trips to the plate while adding a home run and three RBI.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Beavers put runs on the scoreboard first, starting the scoring in the second inning. Minot State's offense started clicking and put up five runs, including a three-run home run off the bat of Williamson.
 
The Marauders failed to push any runs across before the Beavers offense got back to their scoring ways the next inning. Minot State picked up a run on Pegg's leadoff home run off of freshman Cullen Wilson, which brought the Beavers lead to 6-0.
 
Mary narrowed Minot State's lead to 6-1 before the Beavers stretched the advantage to 7-1 in the sixth inning. The Beavers recorded a run on Gutierrez's two-out solo home run off Wilson. Mary put two runs on the scoreboard before the game was over, but Minot State still coasted to the 7-3 win.

BISMARCK, N.D. -- The Minot State Beavers fell 7-6 in an 11-inning matchup to the Mary Marauders on Tuesday.
 
Senior Hayden Bode (0-2) came out of the bullpen for Minot State and took the loss. Junior Griffin Shearon was a bright spot for the Beavers, coming out of the bullpen as well and throwing two shutout innings, allowing one hit, with no walks and one strikeout.
 
At the plate, the Beavers were led by junior Oscar Pegg, who went 2-for-5 on the day with two home runs, a walk and three RBI. Junior Noah Madas put together a noteworthy performance at the plate as well, going 1-for-5 with a home run and two RBI. Junior Shane Kary also helped out for Minot State, putting together three hits in six trips to the plate while adding a double.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Beavers got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the top of the first inning. Pegg put Minot State on the board with a two-out solo home run off junior Konnor Kirchoffner.
 
The Marauders then tied the ballgame at one before the Beavers came back to reclaim their advantage in the second inning. Minot State picked up a run on Madas' leadoff home run off of Kirchoffner, which brought the Beavers lead to 2-1.
 
Minot State held Mary scoreless before building their lead to 4-1 the following inning. Kary and Pegg came in to score the two Beavers runs in the frame on a Noah Madas RBI fielder's choice.
 
Minot State held the Marauders scoreless before building on their lead in the fifth inning. The Beavers scored twice on Pegg's two-run homer, bringing the score to 6-1 in favor of Minot State. The Beavers were unable to hold the lead, as Mary scored six times over the remaining six innings to grab the 7-6 win.
