Beavers make late charge but drop both games at St. Cloud State

ST. CLOUD, Minn. -- The Minot State baseball team put together rallies late in both games Saturday but still fell, 6-2 and 11-3, to host St. Cloud State in an NSIC doubleheader. 
 
Jake Orthner and Noah Gutierrez each had an RBI single in the opener to help close the gap, and Oscar Pegg and Orthner each drove in a run in a 3-run rally in the nightcap for Minot State (16-27 overall, 10-24 NSIC), but the Beavers could get no closer in either game.
 
Minot State wraps up its weekend series at St. Cloud State with a single game against the Huskies on Sunday before returning home to host Bemidji State in a doubleheader on Tuesday at Corbett Field.
 
GAME 1 | Saint Cloud State 6, Minot State 2
ST. CLOUD, Minn. -- Senior Connor Hill went 2-for-4 with a double for the Minot State Beavers in a 6-2 loss to the Saint Cloud State Huskies on Saturday.
 
Senior Hayden Bode (0-4) started and took the loss on the mound for Minot State. Senior Noah Balandran was a bright spot out of the bullpen, going one shutout inning without allowing a hit.
 
At the plate, the Beavers were paced by Hill, who went 2-for-4 on the day with a double. Junior Oscar Pegg put together a standout performance at the dish as well, going 1-for-2 with a double and a walk. Junior Jake Orthner also contributed for Minot State, putting together one hit in three trips to the plate while adding an RBI.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 6-0, the Beavers first put runs on the board in the sixth inning. Minot State got an RBI single from Orthner, scoring Hill from third base.
 
The Beavers kept the deficit at 6-1 before closing the gap further in the seventh. Minot State scored once on an RBI single off the bat of sophomore Noah Gutierrez, which tightened the Huskies lead to 6-2. The ballgame ended with that seventh-inning rally falling short.

Junior Anthnoy Disantis (2-3) got the ball to start for Minot State and took the loss. Senior Gage Eastlick was a bright spot for the Beavers, coming out of the bullpen and throwing one shutout inning, allowing no hits, with no walks and one strikeout.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Beavers were trailing 8-0 in the seventh inning when they first put runs on the board as Oscar Pegg and Jake Orthner each had an RBI single and Pegg scored on a double steal to get Minot State as close as 8-3. The Beavers were unable to get any closer, as Saint Cloud State added three runs to their tally on the way to an 11-3 final.
