Beavers upended in home opener

Minot State gives up 21 points in each of the first and third quarter in loss

Box Score MINOT, N.D. – Minot State University gave up 21 points in each of the first and third quarters as Upper Iowa rolled to a 49-3 win over the Beavers in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference football Saturday at Herb Parker Stadium.

The loss spoiled the Beavers first game under head coach Tyler Hughes at The Herb and left him with a matter-of-fact outlook on things after two games in the ever-tough NSIC.

"I don't think it's misleading. We are what we are right now. If we would've scored those [touchdowns], it's because we're good enough to score those, and right now we're not," He said of the final outcome. "We get back to work tomorrow, do corrections, and try to keep the same routine as we've had. We've got to improve, we've got to get better, and I think we will, but at the same time we have to stay committed to it."

The evening turned sour right from the get-go as Upper Iowa matched 75 yards on nine plays to open the scoring on a 45-yard run by Chris Smith. It was 14-0 after Smith again got into the end zone, this time on a 13-yard scamper. But the biggest blow was a 68-yard TD from Cole Jaeschke to Keaton Hosch with just 34 seconds to play in the quarter. It was a one-play TD drive for the Peacocks.

"I think we had some nervous and just allowed things to spiral out of control," Hughes said. "It was only 7-0, and then it became 14, and I just think [the team] felt like it was kind of an avalanche. But it wasn't that way. It shouldn't have been.

"Everything that we saw today was everything that we prepared for. We just didn't execute."

Minot State (0-2 overall, 0-2 NSIC) struggled to contain the Peacocks (2-0, 2-0) on defense, giving up 489 yards of total offense, a nearly even split between the UIU run game (234) and pass game (255). It was the second-straight week teams exploited the Beavers' defense with a quick, no huddle offense.

"We made too many mental mistakes and it really affected us," said MISU senior defensive back Mike Hickman (Havre, Mont.). "We had a good game plan in place, we just didn't execute it. We need to work on learning to battle through adversity and fight when it gets tough."

After Upper Iowa got to 28-0 early in the second quarter, the Beavers tried to get back into the game as they went on a massive 16 play drive spanning 8:28 of the second quarter. The drive stalled, however, and Minot State settled for a 27-yard field goal by Brian Gutierrez (Sr., K, Granada Hills, Calif.).

It was the only points the Beavers got as they were foiled in the second half in the red zone, turning the ball over on downs.

Smith and Jaeschke combined for 125 yards rushing as Smith had nine carries for 101. Jaeschke passed for 255 yards and two scores and added 24 yards rushing for the Peacocks.

Minot State split time with quarterbacks as Crosby Jensen (So., Salt Lake City, Utah) got his first call of the year, going 15-of-29 passing for 150 yards and two interceptions. Starter Zac Cunha (Jr., Rocklin, Calif.) was just 3-of-9 for 21 yards. Jarvis Mustipher (So., RB, Melbourne, Fla.) finished with 64 yards for the Beavers on the ground as Minot State ended with 248 total yards.

It won't get much easier for the Beavers as they search for their first win of the season, traveling to No. 4 Minnesota State University Saturday.
