MINOT, N.D. – Minot State University's
Kendal Daniels tossed a three-hit shutout to lift the Beavers to a 6-0 win in game 2 and a series win over visiting Winona State in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference baseball Sunday at Jack Hoeven Ballpark.
Daniels was efficient as threw 107 pitches with 77 strikes to rack up six strikeouts including the side in the top of the second. He walked one batter and allowed just two batters to reach second base in the game.
"Kendal threw great," said MSU head coach
Scott Eul. "That was the kind of guy we thought we were going to get at the start of the year. He put his foot down and it was a great game for him."
The Beavers (14-7 overall, 9-5 NSIC) needed the strong outing as they fell 9-0 in game 1, the first time MSU has been shut out on the season. MSU swept Winona State Friday to win the series 3-1, the third four-game series MSU has won already this season.
In game 2, while Daniels was a steady presence on the mound, he also got early run support. The Beavers put up two runs in the first, two more in the fourth and single runs in the fifth and eighth innings.
MSU took the 2-0 lead as
Michael Borst singled home
Sean Alp, who singled to start the rally, and
Celestino Rodriguez platted
Jordan Schulz, who was hit by a pitch, on a sacrifice fly.
The lead grew to 4-0 as
Wyatt Schlosser and
Justin Demary both doubled with Schlosser scoring on Demary's double and Demary scoring on a throwing error later in the inning.
It was more than enough runs for Daniels who retired the side in the first, second, fourth, fifth and ninth innings to improve to 1-2 on the season.
Demary and
Kyle Williamson both went 3 for 4 and Borst was 2 for 4 for the Beavers. Rodriguez drove in two with Borst, Demary and Williamson all picking up one RBI each.
"This was a nice, all-around effort from the guys to get the win in game 2," Eul said. "We playd good team defense in game 2 and our effort was there."
In game 1, WSU's Daniel Karlin-Kamin limited the Beavers to just five hits in a complete-game shutout to run his record to 2-2. Michael Hommes helped his pitcher's cause with a 3 for 4 day with three RBIs including a two-run home run in the top of the second.
MSU's
Trevaun Smith finished with two of the Beavers five hits.
Justin Demary suffered the loss to drop to 3-2 on the season allowing 10 hits and seven runs in 4.2 innings pitched. He gave up just three earned runs as MSU committed three errors that led to five unearned runs in the game.
"We came out flat and didn't play the way we wanted to in game 1," Eul said.
Minot State will step out of NSIC play for a single midweek contest traveling to NCAA Division I North Dakota State Wednesday before taking on league-leader Minnesota State for four games Saturday and Sunday at Corbett Field.
