MINOT, N.D. -- The Minot State football team will host Winona State for Homecoming on Saturday (Sept. 23) at 2 p.m. in Herb Parker Stadium in a game that will be televised by BEK Communications.
This will mark the second of five television appearances for the Beavers overall and the first of three consecutive weeks Minot State games will be aired. Minot State will be featured in Midco telecasts on Sept. 30 at Mary, Oct. 5 versus Northern State and on Nov. 4 versus Minnesota State Moorhead.
Minot State, which is 0-3 overall and 0-3 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, is seeking its first victory of the season on Saturday. Minot State has dropped its last two games against Augustana and Southwest Minnesota State by identical 28-20 scores. Against the Vikings, the Beavers twice drove into Augustana territory in the fourth quarter looking for a game-tying touchdown and two-point conversion only to come away empty. At Southwest Minnesota State the game was decided on the final snap of the game as the Beavers were intercepted at the Mustangs 1-yard line as time expired.
"We are still making enough mistakes to shoot ourselves in the foot," said Minot state head coach
Mike Aldrich. "On the flip side, it's been encouraging because it doesn't matter if we match up well with the other team in terms of size and ability we are still out there competing no matter who we are playing."
Last week at Southwest Minnesota State, the Beavers drove to the Mustangs 9-yard line before having the final pass of the game intercepted at the goal line.
"At the end of the day, knowing that we have the ball and are throwing it into the endzone on the last play of the football game and have an opportunity to tie that game up is exactly where we need to be," Aldrich added.
Sophomore wide receiver
Lavante Bushnell has been outstanding in the last two games for the Beavers as he has a combined nine catches for 138 yards and three touchdowns. He caught a pair of touchdown passes in week two against Augustana and added a 19-yard touchdown reception versus Southwest Minnesota State.
Minot State topped the 100-yard rushing barrier for the first time all season at Southwest Minnesota State with 135 total yards.
Larry Overstreet led the Beavers with 69 yards rushing, while
Hayden Van Winkle added 63 yards on the ground.
Bushnell leads the Beaver receiving group with 13 catches for 172 yards, while
Lane Torgerson has seven catches and
Ryan Fila and
Taylor Maloney each have six catches for the season.
Bryce Broome and
Donnell Vercher, who each had 13 tackles at Southwest Minnesota State, lead the Beaver defense. Broome has 33 tackles, a forced fumble and 1.5 tackles for loss, while Vercher has 30 tackles and a pass breakup.
Kiante Goudeau tops the Beavers with two interceptions and he also returned an interception for a touchdown against Augustana.
Winona State comes into the contest with a 3-0 record and is ranked 21st nationally in the D2Football.com Top 25 Poll. The Warriors have posted wins over Bemidji State, St. Cloud State and Minnesota State Moorhead. The Warriors have won both previous meetings with the Beavers in 2013 and 2015.
