Beaver baseball battles but drops two to SW Minnesota State

MILROY, Minn. -- Minot State baseball team battled throughout the day but couldn't finish off the Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs, falling 8-4 and 17-8 in an NSIC doubleheader Friday on the road.
 
The Beavers (12-12 overall, 7-9 NSIC) were the home team for the two contests, rescheduled to Friday and relocated to Minnesota.
 
Minot State is back in action on Wednesday, playing a non-conference contest at the University of Mary at 2 p.m. before the Beavers make their official home debut next weekend hosting Minnesota State, Mankato in a four-game series at Corbett Field, April 4-6.
 
GAME 1 | Southwest Minnesota State 8, Minot State 4
MILROY, Minn. -- Minot State received contributions from every part of their lineup, as all nine starters reached base safely, but the Beavers fell to the Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs 8-4 on Friday in the first game of an NSIC doubleheader.
 
Sophomore Conner Meldrim (2-1) started and took the loss on the mound for Minot State.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Beavers got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the bottom of the first inning. Junior Michael Williamson came across to score the lone run of the inning for Minot State on a senior Brent Riddle sacrifice fly and get the Beavers on the board.
 
The Mustangs then rallied to score two runs and take a 2-1 lead before the Beavers got back on the board in the third. Minot State picked up two runs when a single from Riddle scored Williamson and sophomore Noah Gutierrez, which brought the Beavers lead to 3-2.
 
Minot State held Southwest Minnesota State scoreless before building their lead to 4-2 the following inning. The Beavers scored once on an RBI single off the bat of sophomore Kekoa Munos. The Beavers were unable to hold the lead, as Southwest Minnesota State scored six times over the remaining three innings to grab the 8-4 win.

MILROY, Minn. -- Junior Parker Rodgers collected four RBIs, but the Minot State Beavers fell to the Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs 17-8 on Friday in the finale of the teams' NSIC series.
 
Freshman Wyatt Toth (1-4) got the ball to start for Minot State and took the loss.
 
Rodgers went 1-for-3 with a home run in addition to his four RBIs for the Beavers. Senior Brent Riddle put together a noteworthy performance at the dish as well, going 3-for-5 with a double, a home run and two RBI. Junior Oscar Pegg also contributed for Minot State, putting together one hit in five trips to the plate while adding a double and an RBI.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 2-0, the Beavers first put runs on the board in the second inning. Minot State scored three times, all of them coming across on a three-run homer off the bat of Rodgers.
 
The Beavers lost the lead they built in the second, but got back on the board in the sixth trailing 9-3. Minot State pushed across a run on Pegg's RBI double, which tightened the Mustangs lead to 9-4.
 
Southwest Minnesota State built their lead to 11-4 before the Minot State offense got back to work, reducing that lead to 11-8 in the eighth. The Beavers bats heated up in the inning, scoring four runs, including a two-run home run off the bat of Riddle. The Beavers were unable to get any closer, as Southwest Minnesota State added six runs to their tally on the way to a 17-8 final.
