Box Score 2 MINOT, N.D. – It was a bittersweet day for nine Minot State baseball seniors, as they knew they were playing their last two games of their collegiate careers Saturday afternoon.
Due to a dominant pitching performance and some clutch hitting, the Beavers were able to make a Saturday sweep of the University of Mary (17-22-1 overall 8-16 NSIC) with wins 3-2 & 9-5 at Jack Hoeven Ballpark.
“Our seniors played well for us today,” said Minot State head coach
Brock Weppler. “We need some big performances and we got them. I am extremely proud of this group and how they played today.
In game one, senior
Cole Stober (P, Hays, Alberta) took the mound for MISU and pitched a gem, but it wasn't without a rally from the Marauders. Stober had pitched six shutout innings allowing just three hits when he went out to finish the game in the seventh.
U-Mary then got a few big hits including a two-run double from Austin Grundstad to pull within one. Weppler visited his senior on the mound, but kept him in to finish the job. Stober got the next batter to ground out to second base, ending the game and Stober's Minot State career in winning fashion.
“Stober pitched well for us and I wanted him to give it all he had,” said Weppler. “I'm happy he finished the job.”
Offensively, senior
Shayne Court (OF, Red Deer, Alberta) led the charge with two hits and one RBI from the ninth spot in the lineup. Hitters one through seven each collected one hit in the win.
In game two of the afternoon, Minot State needed an offensive surge in the late innings to get the win. The Beavers scored two runs in the seventh and three runs in the eighth to end their season with a four-game series win over their NSIC rival.
Alex Fornshell (Jr., SS, Minot, N.D.) led MISU with three hits, three runs and two RBI, while seniors
Mike Turcotte (CF, Victoria, British Columbia) and
Mitch Olson (1B, Deloraine, Manitoba) combined for five RBI and three hits.
Senior pitcher
Shane Seddon (Winnipeg, Manitoba) picked up the win going four strong innings and not allowing an earned run out of the bullpen. Senior
Jarrett Duchscher (P, Regina, Saskatchewan) also pitched well, picking up the save with two scoreless innings.
“I was just hoping we come out this weekend and play with some confidence and play for our seniors,” Weppler said. “I think we did just that. We weren't passive and we played hard out there and that's what we need to do to end the season on the right note.”
Minot State ends their season with a 15-23 overall record and a 7-17 record in the Northern Sun.
